Introduction | Withdrawal | Original description

In March 2019 Poulin Antiques & Auctions from Fairfield (Maine, USA) announced that it would auction an 'early painting by WWII German leader Adolf Hitler', as lot #2466, on the 'Spring 2019 Firearms Auction', March 30th – April 2nd 2019. It was estimated that it would sell for $3,000 to $5,000.

Photos and the description of the work immediately alarmed us. For these reasons:

1. As far as is known Hitler painted in 1910-1914 only cityscapes of Vienna (1910-1913) and Munich (1913-1914).

2. The style on this watercolor doesn't resemble any known authentic Hitler watercolor.
Even though almost all known authentic Hitler watercolors are in fact enlarged copies (in pencil and watercolor) Hitler made from photos, these copies have certain things in common - which marks the 'style' of the copy maker.

3. The works originates, according to Hans. O.A. Horváth, from August Priesack, as - according to Horváth - Priestess's 'proofstamp' can be seen on the back side of the work.
But: no 'proof stamp' of Priesack can be detected on the photo of the backside. On the back is a stamp print of Horváth:

And: even if there had been a Priesack stamp on the back, then it would only have acted as an extra indicator for the fraudulent nature of this work, as 'Prof' Dr. August Priesack was a notorious 'Hitler art' con artist, who authenticated numerous forged Hitler items.

4. In the description is stated: “Peter Jahn of Vienna and Dr. August Priesack were considered the leading experts able to authenticate the paintings of Adolf Hitler”. The only ones who said so were Peter Jahn and August Priesack themselves. These two have been exposed as swindlers long since.

5. The Austrian Hans O.A. Horváth is notorious for his fraudulent Certificates of Authenticity (CoAs), which he issued/issues to clearly forged Hitler paintings. It is not without reason that the German police seized recently all 'Hitlers' accompanied by CoAs issued by Horváth at Weidler auction house in Nuremberg. Because of his fraudulent activities, Mr. Horváth is now under investigation by the German police.

Withdrawal

After we warned the auction house, it withdrew this clearly forged Hitler from the upcoming auction

We also advised the auctioneer to report the consignor of the work to the police, for fraud/attempted fraud - for offering a forged item as authentic is a crime, in every country on this planet. Reporting this fraud case to the police could also result in the confiscation of the forgery, and - after proper forensic research - probably result in a conviction of the responsible swindler(s).

We don't know if the auctioneer did inform the police. If he didn't, then it can be expected that the present owner will try to offer it again to another auction house.

For this reason, we show on this page photos of this withdrawn 'Hitler'. If it will be offered again, it will in this way easily be identified as a very suspect work.

Original description by auctioneer:

A well executed watercolor of a hill village scene. Image size is approx. 11 1/2" x 7 7/8". Gold finished frame size is approx. 18" x 14". The painting utilizes a palette & type of paper known to have been used by Hitler. It is signed in the lower left hand corner "A. Hitler 1913". Reverse of painting has a Viennese dealers stamp. German authentication paperwork is provided w/ the painting. The letter accompanying the painting [written by Hans O.A. Horvath] reads: "Aquarell: 'Riegersburg Ost Steiermark' Papier, l. u. signiert A. Hitler 1913. MaBe: 31,1 x 21,4 cm. This loosely translates to: "Watercolor: 'Riegersburg East Steiermark' paper, l. u. signed A. Hitler 1913. Dimensions: 31.1 x 21.4 cm. This work, submitted to me, is, after my examination, a doubtless work by Adolf Hitler. Color and paper quality coincide with that of the time. This watercolor is privately owned and bears the proof stamp of Professor Priesack by Aug der Ruck. Comparable works from the catalog of works were: No. 95, 81, 157. The exhibit was by me provided with my proof stamp on the reverse.". Peter Jahn of Vienna and Dr. August Priesack were considered the leading experts able to authenticate the paintings of Adolf Hitler [nonsense; Jahn was a repeatedly convicted criminal andart swindler]. In 1935, the historical section of the NSDAP official archives in Munich was assigned the systematic task of locating & certifying the paintings of Adolf Hitler. Two archivists, Wilhelm Dammann & Dr. August Priesack, worked together & were responsible for authenticating all Hitler artwork that could be traced, purchased, or borrowed [nonsense; there exists no evidence at all that Priesack and Jahn worked together before the 1970's]. The actual search for the art was carried out by staff members under the auspices of Hitler's deputy Rudolf Hess. Peter Jahn & Dr. Priesack were the last surviving experts in the NSDAP search for Hitler's art. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: letter from Hans O. A. Horvath, Conservator. CONDITION: painting remains quite crisp w/ vivid colors & fine lines. Matte is a bit toned. Frame has a few tight age cracks but no losses. (02-11862/BF). $3,000-5,000.
