Auctions |  Certificates of Authenticity

The strange business of selling fakes, forgeries and other concoctions attributed to Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) and other Nazi criminals.

The annual global turnover

"Naturally, exact figures are hard to come by, but the market’s annual global turnover is estimated to be in excess of £30m." [= €35 /$39 million] - Guardian, June 24, 2015.

"Despite the trade of Nazi antiquities being banned or strictly regulated in many countries, the market’s annual global turnover is expected to be in excess of $47 million." [= €42 / £36 million] - New York Post, June 27, 2015.

Origin of the estimation

The estimation originates via The Hitler Virus, a book from the American journalist Peter Wyden (1923-1998) from Stern Magazine, October, 1984. Wyden: "The Stern writers participated in one of the many auctions of "militaria" that have kept galleries flush with a business said to be grossing $40 million a year."

With inflation correction this amount would be equal to $127.3 million / £97.3 million / € 114.17 million anno 2019.

Yet, the prices and numbers of Nazi militaria items have only risen since 1984. This would logically mean that the annual turnover in 2019/2020 is much higher than was estimated before.

2015 - 'Hitler' still life with Morgenstern stamp print
2015 - The fifth 'Alter Hof'? Thies, Germany.

2015 - 'Hitler' with 'Morgenstern'-seal in USA

On March 26, 2015 auction house Nate D. Sanders in Los Angeles was about to auction a watercolor allegedly painted by Hitler, start price $ 30,000. Hitler would have made this work in 1912. Already in 1936 the Viennese police established that Hitler never painted still lifes  - which make this work a very silly fake.

Shortly before the auction this work was withdrawn. No reason was given.
On the back side of this work a S. Morgenstern stamp print was to be found, similar to the one depicted in Price (1983). Which means this fake is  one way or another connected to the Austrian art swindler Peter Jahn (1904-1990).

Left the alleged Morgenstern stamp print in Price; right the stamp print on the back of the 2015 "Hitler". They are made with the same stamp.

We haven't traced a CoA issued by Peter Jahn to this work yet.

2015 - 'Hitler' in Malaga

Op 28 maart 2015 wordt in het Spaanse Malaga bij 'International Autograph Auctions Europe, S.L.' een 'Hitler' geveild. Met dit verkoop-praatje:

"An original 10.5 x 14 watercolour painting, purported to be by Adolf Hitler, unsigned, the image depicting a clock tower, with various trees in the foreground. Annotated in contemporary pencil to the verso, in German, Stift bei Wels 18 Februar 1921 Adolf Hitler, indicating that the subject of the painting is the Wels Abbey in Austria." (...)

"Provenance: According to information supplied by the vendor, all of which is documented in various newspaper articles (copies of which are included with the lot) the present painting was gifted by Hitler to Herman Goering. It was later to come into the possession of former Luftwaffe pilot Karol Bachraty (father of the vendor) following his escape from a Russian Concentration Camp in 1945. Bachraty made his way to Italy, accompanied by other Third Reich officers. Bachraty was to spend the rest of his life in Chile where he encountered other former officers and together they formed a small association. Bachraty was elected with the chief responsibility of taking care of the paintings, some of which the colleagues intended to sell in order to fund a care home for former officers."

Zie: Certificates of Authenticity - Anni Winter.

2015 - the fith Alter Hof? December 6, 2015

Lot 1090 at Thies Militaria Auctions LLC, Kirchheim under Teck, Germany

Description by actioneer: “Painting is signed "A.Hitler" in lower right hand corner and "Munchen 1914, Alter Hof" in the lower left. Painting measures 10 1/2 by 14 1/2 and comes with a letter of authenticity from Hitler's original archivist, Professor Dr. August Priesack. This painting represents the fifth water coloring of the Alter Hof in Munich and most likely given by Hitler to his many guests at the Lowenbraukeller beer hall. This specimen is characterized by the amazing preservation of its colors as it was most likely kept in storage over the years. An important historical example representing Adolf Hitler's time in Munich prior to his rise to power.”

Comment by Droog Magazine:

This work remained unsold. I's hard to say if this is an authentic one or NSDAP-Hauptarchiv copy or even a postwar forgery.

It is known that Hitler made at least four versions version of 'Alter Hof'. The first owners of these four are known.  How these works looked and what their dimensions were is however not known of all these four.

It is also known that the NSDAP Hauptarchiv commissioned one copy of 'Alter Hof'.

This 'Alter Hof' differs from the three depicted in Price (nrs. 380, 381 and 382. It differs also from the 'Alter Hof' of the US Army Center for Military History, the one confiscated from Heinrich Hoffmann and reproduced in a 1930s book.

With this work no information at all about the provenance is given. The Certificate of Authenticity issued by August Priesack has no value; the man authenticated any alleged Hitler presented to him, including freshly painted forgeries by Konrd Kujau.

Which means that this work can't be regarded as authentic, until proper forensic research will tell if this work could possibly originate from 1913-1914, or from the 1930s, or is a postwar forgery.
